In the latest of our series of posts on employment law cases in the news, we take a look at ten employment law cases that have made headlines between 28 November 2016 and 4 December 2016

  1. Former NHS director sues Jeremy Hunt for religious discrimination – A former director of an NHS trust is suing Jeremy Hunt for religious discrimination after he was effectively barred from applying for positions following his public opposition to gay adoption (The Guardian)
  2. Unfair dismissal hearings on former Barclays banker adjourned – A London tribunal has adjourned until May 2017 hearings into an unfair dismissal and whistleblowing claim by a former senior Barclays banker amid a mounting row over whether the reporting of the case should be restricted (The Financial Times)
  3. Sacked Sport NI chief McKeown vows to expose ‘months of torture’ at organisation – The sacked CEO of Sport NI has lifted the lid on her “harrowing” time at the publicly-funded organisation. Antoinette McKeown was the first female boss of Sport NI when she was appointed in 2013, but she was suspended just 18 months into the job and subsequently fired (The Belfast Telegraph)
  4. Manager demoted for failing to bow to Korean boss, UK tribunal told – A financial manager at a UK branch of a Korean firm lost her job because she refused to bow to her boss, an employment tribunal has heard. Misook McDonald, 43, claims she was demoted to secretarial duties after the perceived slight and is suing Dongbu Daewoo Electronics for sex discrimination, age discrimination and racial discrimination (The Guardian)
  5. Suspended nurse Matshediso Mathuba wins £24,000 payout for unfair dismissal from her job at Littlestone hospital in Dartford – A nurse who was suspended from practicing from a year has won more than £24,000 in compensation for unfair dismissal from her job. Matshediso Mathuba was struck off the nursing register by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (“NMC”) in April this year (Kent Online)
  6. Banker who claimed his boss called him a terrorist after he started taking flying lessons loses employment tribunal – A banker who claimed his boss called him a terrorist and and referred to Arabic clients as ‘camel f***ers’ lost his employment tribunal yesterday. Maurice Marco, who worked for Bank of America Merrill Lynch in London, claimed that when he started taking flying lessons his boss compared him to the 9/11 al Qaeda terrorists (The Daily Mail)
  7. York Hospital responds to Khursid Karimi’s claims in tribunal hearing – A hospital surgeon repeatedly accessed confidential medical notes for patients he was not treating or responsible for, an employment tribunal has heard. They have heard that Khursid Anwar Karimi tried seven times in one day to persuade records staff at York Hospital to hand over records of a patient who had died three years earlier (The Yorkshire Press)
  8. West Midlands police and crime commissioner taken to tribunal by ex-deputy – West Midlands’ Police and Crime Commissioner David Jamieson is being taken to an Employment Tribunal by his former deputy. Yvonne Mosquito disputed her suspension in March over an allegation she breached protocol by visiting a murder victim’s family before telling police (BBC)
  9. ‘Whistle-blower’ estate agent was unfairly dismissed, rules tribunal – An estate agent at an office of London agency Felicity J Lord, who alleged unethical practices were taking place in the branch, was unfairly dismissed, a tribunal has ruled (Estate Agent Today)
  10. Tony Pulis loses £3.7m Crystal Palace court battle – West Bromwich Albion manager Tony Pulis has lost a £3.7m High Court battle with former club Crystal Palace. A Premier League Managers’ Arbitration Tribunal ruled earlier this year Pulis should pay £3.7m damages to the club in a dispute about the way he left at the start of the 2014-15 season (BBC)
