Employment Tribunal cases in the news this week – 28.10.2013 to 03.11.2013

MoJIn the latest of our series of posts on employment tribunal cases in the news this week, we take a look at a number of employment tribunal cases that have hit the news since 28 October 2013. This includes a former draughtsman who has won his claim for unfair dismissal in the employment tribunal, two former employees complaining after not being paid their employment tribunal awards and a former clinical support worker who has lost his claim for unfair dismissal

  1. Draughtsman awarded £4,000 after winning employment tribunal claim – a Rugeley-based design draughtsman has won £4,000 in the employment tribunal after an employment judge ruled that he had been unfairly dismissed whilst he was off work sick (The Staffordshire Newsletter)
  2. Former employees complain after employment tribunal judgments not paid – two former employees of self-styled “serial entrepreneur” Mike Small have said that they are still waiting to be paid after they were successful in their employment tribunal claim for unpaid wages earlier this year (The Darlington and Stockton Times)
  3. Former manager of Royal Mail Droitwich depot loses claim for unfair dismissal – the former manager of Royal Mail’s Droitwich depot has lost his claim for unfair dismissal after he was sacked last year for failing to deal properly with delays to deliveries. The employment tribunal rejected his claim after finding that it was not an unreasonable decision to dismiss the former manager because of this (The Droitwich Advertiser)
  4. Ex-RCHT chairman told he cannot take trust to an employment tribunal – the former chairman of the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust (RCHT) has been told that he cannot take his case for unfair dismissal to the employment tribunal as he does not have the correct legal status to do so (BBC)
  5. Big Fat Gypsy Wedding designer suing former employer after being sacked – the former head head designer for the Big Fat Gypsy Weddings dressmaker is taking her former employer to the employment tribunal for unfair dismissal after she was sacked without notice last year (The Mirror)
  6. Woman suing former insurance company employer for sex discrimination fails at the employment tribunal – a woman has had her employment tribunal claim for sex discrimination and unfair dismissal rejected by the employment tribunal after her employer successfully argued that there was a genuine redundancy situation (The Kidderminster Shuttle)
  7. Former perfume counter manager settles employment tribunal claim – a former perfume counter manager at Binns has settled his employment tribunal claim for unfair dismissal and race and sex discrimination for an undisclosed amount (The Fragrance Post)
  8. Former embassy workers succeed with human rights argument in the employment tribunal – Two Moroccan nationals have won the right to sue their former embassy employers for harassment and discrimination after the Employment Appeal Tribunal ruled that legal immunity for the embassy staff breached their human rights (The Evening Standard)
  9. Former clinical support workers loses employment tribunal claim for unfair dismissal – a former support worker at Russels Hall Hospital has failed in his claim for unfair dismissal after he was sacked for allegedly abusing a patient at the hospital (The Birmingham Mail)

Buckinghamshire County Council loses employment tribunal claim over attempted “bribe” – Buckinghamshire County Council has lost an employment tribunal claim after one of its employees claimed that the promise of £750 to be paid to him if he agreed to vary his contract was unlawful (The Buckinghamshire Herald)
