In the latest of our series of posts on employment law cases in the news, we take a look at nine employment law cases that have made the news between 29 June and 4 July 2017

  1. Manager was sacked by Bradford District Apprenticeship Training Agency for being pregnant, tribunal rules – An agency which is part of the Get Bradford Working programme sacked an employee because she was pregnant, an employment tribunal has ruled. Tribunal Judge John Robertson agreed Daniella Lewandowski had suffered “a year of hell” after she was unfairly dismissed by the Bradford District Apprenticeship Training Agency when her pregnancy came to light (The Telegraph and Argus)
  2. ‘Inappropriate’ council advert could be key to victory in foster carers tribunal – An ‘inappropriate’ council advert stating specialist foster carers would be paid a salary may be the key to victory in a landmark employment tribunal. The advert was presented by QC Aidan O’Neill during a hearing in Glasgow yesterday, which is taking place to determine if two foster carers should be considered as employees of Glasgow City Council during their work with troubled young people (The Evening Times)
  3. Bonuses joy for women workers as council loses appeal in equal pay dispute – Hundreds of female council workers are set to receive extra cash after a senior judge ruled in their favour in a long-running pay dispute. The women took Glasgow City Council to court after being refused bonus payments which were being made to men (The Daily Record)
  4. North West company fined after worker was injured by a fork lift truck – A North West manufacturing company has been fined after an employee was struck by a fork lift truck in Chester. Liverpool Magistrates Court heard that Encirc Ltd, a producer of glass bottles for the drinks industry had failed to take effective measures to ensure its workers were correctly segregated from fork lift trucks (HSE)
  5. Jaguar Land Rover worker given £20,000 compensation – over ‘hurt feelings’ – A Jaguar Land Rover staff member involved in controversy over a factory poster has been awarded nearly £20,000 – for hurt feelings. The poster, at Jaguar’s Solihull factory, featured a tree full of healthy apples with a rotten apple in the middle (The Coventry Telegraph)
  6. Ex North Wales top cop who told shooting club colleague ‘You will die’ loses tribunal – A former senior police officer at the centre of a bitter row within the country’s largest fieldsports organisations has lost his claim for unfair dismissal (The Daily Post)
  7. Sidcup Your Move estate agent whose Chessington-based boss offered to perform sex act if he hit his targets wins sex discrimination tribunal – An estate agent whose manager offered to perform a sex act if he hit sales targets has won a sexual discrimination employment tribunal. Senior financial consultant Paul Elworthy, 45, worked at a Your Move estate agency in Eltham and was given the offer at a Christmas party in 2013 (Your Local Guardian)
  8. Holiday pay: ambulance workers win overtime claim – An employment tribunal has held that ambulance workers’ compulsory overtime in respect of “shift overruns” should be included in the calculation of their holiday pay, in the latest decision to apply the abundant case law on how employers should calculate pay during annual leave (Personnel Today)
  9. Council fined after apprentice’s fingers crushed – Nottingham City Council has today been fined after an apprentice suffered serious hand injuries. Nottingham Crown Court heard how the 22-year-old worker was on site at Seagrave Primary School on 21 August 2014, when the lawnmower he was using became blocked (HSE)
